How much does an expungement cost in Redding?
Cost is one of the first questions people ask, so here is a straight answer.
Our attorney fee
Our fee is $750 flat fee, standard PC 1203.4, per case. You’ll know the fee in writing before you hire us, and it won’t change unless your case turns out to need more work and you agree to it in writing.
A “standard” petition generally means one eligible case where probation was completed and no extra requests are needed. If your case needs more, such as a felony reduction under PC 17(b), early termination of probation, a Prop 47 request, or a contested hearing, we’ll tell you the cost in writing before any work starts.
Court costs
California no longer charges a court filing fee for most PC 1203.4 petitions. Other small costs may come up, such as copies of old court records or a copy of your California DOJ record. We’ll tell you about any of these up front.
What can change the cost
- More than one case: each case is a separate petition, so the fee is per case.
- Probation not completed or still running: may need an “interests of justice” request or early termination.
- A felony that should be reduced: a 17(b) request is often filed with the dismissal.
- An objection from the District Attorney: a contested hearing takes more work.
- Missing information: very old cases may need records research.
Free and low-cost options
You don’t have to hire a lawyer to file. If cost is a barrier, these resources may be able to help:
- California Courts Self-Help Guide: free forms and instructions at selfhelp.courts.ca.gov.
- Legal Services of Northern California, Redding office: free record clearing for eligible low-income residents. (530) 241-3565.
- Shasta County Public Defender: may be able to help with expungements. (530) 245-7598.
We’re happy to point you to these if they’re a better fit. Our eligibility review is free either way.
Why some people hire a lawyer
A lawyer can check which type of relief fits, spot problems before filing (an unfinished probation, a felony that should be reduced first, a second case you forgot about), prepare a supporting declaration, deal with the District Attorney, and handle the hearing, usually without you needing to go to court.
